Our Story
M.Special is a unique collective of friends and family from across the world of beer, food, and entertainment.
The idea behind our brewery name began with founders Chris Miller, Brendan Malloy and Emmett Malloy. They wanted a way to include their family names in the title, and decided to leave it at a simple letter that represents the lot of them. âMâ is followed by âSpecialâ because that also happened to be the nickname of their Grandpa Emmettâs collection of tether cars. An M.Special car, or a âMalloy Special.â One was raced throughout the 1950s and competed in the Indy 500. The generation of Malloys that started this brewery in 2013 are story-tellers. Their homage to racing history extends to our collection of core beers, named as though cars themselves.
The portfolio of beers is diverse, ranging from our flagship M. Special American Lager to hoppy options such as the Greatland IPA and Lazy Eye DIPA. You can find these beers at most local retailers between Ventura and SLO, or visit the taprooms for the full show!

M.Special brewery was fortunate enough to partner with one of the most passionate and inventive brewers in the area. Josh is an award winning brewer who specializes in making beers to satisfy the amazingly complex and ever thirsty palates of todaysâ Zymurgy enthusiasts. His passion for beer was born in his garage as a homebrewer, and has fueled him to literally dozens of awards, medals, and accolades.

Our State Street location also has a great projector setup for screenings. We’ve hosted everything from projects directed by our very own Malloy brothers, to The Cigarette Surfboard feature documentary and local productions like Angel Hernandez’s Jokes Over, featured in Thrasher Magazine.
